About

Charity Morrison is a horn player, composer, poet, and inquisitive creative whose work draws on a diverse life experience and multicultural upbringing. Although trained in the classical tradition, her versatility is her strongest suit, performing extensively by ear across genres, including pop, rock, jazz, and sacred music.

As a solo and collaborative performer, Charity was appointed 2023-2025 Artist-in-Residence at Mirabella, a luxury retirement community, where she programmed and performed weekly recitals in a wide range of styles, along with coordinating community engagement & education events and lecturing regularly on musical topics. She frequently participates in a variety of chamber ensemble configurations, recently performing with the Louise Baranger Nonet at The Nash, Phoenix's premiere jazz venue. She has performed as a duo with operatic soprano Michelle Pérez, as a member of Chareddie Case with contemporary guitarist Eddie Islas, and alongside jazz fusion ensemble Aliyah Danielle & Friends. As a freelancer, Charity has played with the Phoenix Symphony, the Sedona Symphony, the West Valley Symphony, ProMusica Arizona, the Scottsdale Philharmonic, and others.

Charity completed a Masters in Horn Performance at Arizona State University with Dr. John Ericson, where she served for two years as orchestral principal. Prior to that, she studied at the University of North Texas with Dr. Stacie Mickens, where she graduated summa cum laude with her Bachelor of Arts in Music and dual minors in English and Chinese. During her time at UNT, she participated as a member of the Latin Grammy-nominated North Texas Wind Symphony under Professor Eugene Corporon and can be heard on the ensemble’s recorded albums Respair and Closure [GIA Publications]. Charity's love for nurturing learning has extended through her work as a private lesson instructor in horn and piano.

A thoughtful composer and improviser, Charity’s works emphasize expressive melodies and lyricism, always seeking to substantiate meaning beyond the music. Her first love is the written word, and as such her musical work is often run through with elements of poetry and prose, frequently grappling with religious histories, broken & chosen families, and the juxtaposition of queer longing and joy in both her compositions and writings.

Charity’s past and present professional affiliations include Mu Phi Epsilon, the International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC), Maestra Music, the International Alliance of Women in Music, the UNT Composers’ Forum, and the Csehy Summer School of Music. She was recently the featured composer for the 2025 Arizona Women's Collaborative New Works Initiative, a research presenter at the 2025 SHE: Festival of Women in Music, a contributing artist at the 56th International Horn Symposium, and the Susan Slaughter Solo Competition 3rd place award winner in her respective category at IWBC 2022.

Charity was born and raised in Wuhan, China, and currently lives in New York City. Outside of her musical pursuits, Charity is an avid cook and enjoys vibrant company, literature, urban walks, and a strong cup of coffee.
